Elk River

Driving north out of Steamboat Springs is perhaps the most agreeable and picturesque excursion that there is around here. Following Route 129, this winding road conveys you along the Elk River and through probably the most picturesque properties in the valley. Huge cattle farms, wide-open fields, and wildflowers rule the view, with unlimited fields of grains and hay. Deer and elk incessant these regions to take feed in the early morning daylight while various hawks, eagles, and smaller songbirds patrol the sky, watching over from the bluebird sky.  It's a wildlife oasis and if you are searching for peace and tranquility, the Elk River Valley is for you. There is a lot of space to meander here. If you appreciate fishing, setting up camp, or climbing, hiking, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or really anything outdoors... you'll love the Elk River area. Starting high in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness, the Elk is a standout amongst other fishing streams in the region. Various public accesses will manage you to the best spots to land the perfect fish. Mad Creek trailhead is found mostly up the valley and gives the ideal spot for a spring wildflower experience.
